This 1960s Harlequin lowboy dresser, designed by Merton Gershun for American of Martinsville, is built around one of the most striking fronts of the period. The two center doors are carved in relief with a field of elongated diamonds that catch the light and cast shadows across the walnut, giving the case its harlequin name. Banks of three drawers with round brass pulls flank the carved doors, and the long, low case rests on slim tapered legs set in from the corners.
Storage is generous across the full 70 inch width. The six outer drawers handle everyday clothing, and the carved center doors open to three more drawers with gently curved fronts, keeping folded items out of sight behind the pattern. The dresser works as the anchor of a bedroom wall or as a sculptural credenza in a dining or living room, and the American of Martinsville mark is still inside a drawer.
This lowboy dresser is in vintage as-pictured condition, showing wear consistent with age and use including surface wear, finish inconsistencies, and minor imperfections throughout. These characteristics contribute to the original vintage appeal and authenticity that many collectors appreciate. For those looking for a fully refinished example, we also offer a restored option. Restoration includes a complete professional refinishing process with sanding, staining, glazing, toning, and lacquering, along with functional adjustments to ensure all drawers and doors operate smoothly and the dresser is ready for everyday use. The piece shows signs of heavy use, so we recommend the restored option.
